Life and Origins
Miyoshi Jikkyu (1527–1562) was a Sengoku period warrior, born as the second son of Miyoshi Motonaga, the Awa deputy governor. His elder brother was Miyoshi Nagayoshi, who rose to become the most powerful figure in the Kinai region. After their father's forced suicide in 1532, the brothers navigated perilous political waters from an early age.
Rule as Deputy Governor of Awa
While Nagayoshi consolidated power in the Kinai region, Jikkyu governed Awa and Sanuki provinces on Shikoku. In 1553, he eliminated his nominal lord Hosokawa Ujiyuki and installed a puppet successor, establishing complete control over Awa. The resulting dual structure — Nagayoshi controlling the Kinai and Jikkyu controlling Shikoku — defined the height of Miyoshi power.
Tea Culture and Death at Kumeda
A celebrated tea practitioner, Jikkyu studied under Takeno Joo and was noted by tea master Yamanoue Soji as owning fifty famous tea utensils. He founded Myokoku-ji Temple in Sakai. He died in battle at Kumeda in 1562 at age 36, a blow that accelerated the decline of Miyoshi clan power.
