Kawakami Gensai

Kawakami Gensai (1834–1872) was a swordsman from Higo Province (present-day Kumamoto Prefecture) during the Bakumatsu period and is known as one of the Four Great Swordsmen of the Bakumatsu. Renowned for his light build and swift swordsmanship, he was also called "Gentle Gensai" (Yawara no Gensai), and his character is said to be one of the models for Himura Kenshin, the protagonist of the manga and anime Rurouni Kenshin.

Gensai was born into a gōshi (rural samurai) family of Higo Domain (Kumamoto Domain) and received swordsmanship training from childhood. His sword technique was largely self-developed—though it is also said that he studied iaijutsu under the Katayama Hōki School—and his elegant sword handling was already renowned in his time. He became deeply involved in the Sonnō Jōi (Revere the Emperor, Expel the Barbarians) movement. It is said that in 1862 he was involved in a shooting attack on the residence of Takatsukasa Sukehiro, a pro-bakufu court noble, or alternatively that in 1864 he plotted the assassination of Katsura Kogorō (Kido Takayoshi), a pro-bakufu statesman, though the details remain disputed.

During his activities in Bakumatsu Kyoto, Gensai is said to have killed several government officials. Among them, the 1864 assassination of Sakuma Shōzan stands as one of the most historically confirmed and prominent incidents. Sakuma Shōzan was an enlightened thinker and military theorist of the time, and his assassination had a profound impact.

Following the Meiji Restoration, Gensai opposed the Meiji government's policies and sided with discontented samurai from his former domain. In 1872, he was arrested as a traitor and executed in Tokyo at the young age of 38. His life is often portrayed as that of a swordsman troubled by his acts of killing, and the characterization of Kenshin in Rurouni Kenshin—notably his vow of non-violence—is said to reflect such interpretations. As a practitioner of the Japanese sword in actual combat and as an important figure in Bakumatsu history, Gensai is remembered to this day.
