Life and Origins

Ito Yoshisuke (c. 1513–1585) was born into the Ito clan, which controlled Hyuga Province in present-day Miyazaki Prefecture. After surviving fierce internal power struggles following his father's death, he became the 11th head of the Ito clan in 1536.

The Forty-Eight Castles and the Height of Ito Power

Under Yoshisuke's leadership, the Ito clan expanded dramatically. By the 1560s they controlled most of Hyuga Province, supported by a network of some forty-eight subsidiary fortresses. In 1568, Yoshisuke led an army of 20,000 to besiege the Shimazu-held Obi Castle, eventually securing it through a peace agreement — the peak of Ito clan power in southern Kyushu.

The Battle of Kizakibaru and Collapse

In 1572, Yoshisuke sent 3,000 troops against a force of only 300 under Shimazu Yoshihiro at Kakuto Castle (Kizakibaru). The resulting defeat — considered Yoshihiro's greatest military triumph — decimated the Ito leadership and triggered a cascade of defections. By 1577 Yoshisuke had abandoned Hyuga entirely and fled to seek refuge with Otomo Sorin in Bungo — the event known as the "Ito Collapse." He died in 1585 at age 72 in Sakai, never recovering his domain.

Sword Association

Yoshisuke is associated with the "Tachi, Mumei, Rai Kuninaga" — an unsigned tachi traditionally attributed to a smith of the Nakajima-Rai branch of the Rai school, active in the Nanbokuchō period, known for its straight hamon.
