Fujita Nobuyoshi

Fujita Nobuyoshi (1559–1616) was a senior retainer of Uesugi Kagekatsu, connected to the Fujita clan who had originally served Takeda Shingen. Highly trusted within the Uesugi clan, he nonetheless defected to Tokugawa Ieyasu just before the Keichō Dewa Campaign of 1600, earning the label 'traitor of the Uesugi.' He is credited with influencing the decision to halt the Uesugi subjugation campaign (the pivot to the Eastern Army) that directly triggered the Battle of Sekigahara. He carried swords forged by Echigo and Dewa smiths within the Uesugi retinue and is remembered as a figure who combined strategic cunning with martial prowess. His views on swords and the warrior's way drew considerable debate from later generations, shaped by the independent judgment he exercised as a commander amid the political upheaval surrounding Sekigahara.
