Yoshioka Ichimonji Sukeyoshi

Yoshioka Ichimonji Sukeyoshi was the founding swordsmith of the Yoshioka Ichimonji school, active in Bizen Province (Yoshioka district, present-day Kume County, Okayama Prefecture) during the late Kamakura period (ca. 1299–1324). According to the Yoshioka Ichimonji Wikipedia article, he was the grandson of Fukuoka Ichimonji Sukemune and held the title "Saemon-no-jo."

The Yoshioka Ichimonji school rose to prominence as the Fukuoka Ichimonji school declined, continuing the Ichimonji tradition on the west bank of the Yoshii River. Like its predecessor, the school signed blades with the single character "一" (ichi). Stylistically, compared to the Fukuoka Ichimonji, the Yoshioka Ichimonji hamon shows slightly less variation in its choji pattern — somewhat more restrained but still displaying the characteristic bright nioi-guchi and vivid midare-utsuri.

Sukeyoshi's own blades exhibit the late Kamakura Bizen sugata — broad-bodied tachi with strong funbari — with choji-midare hamon incorporating ko-gunome, and boshi tending toward ko-maru or midare-komi. The jihada shows itame with flowing areas and clear midare-utsuri consistent with Bizen tradition.

Sukeyoshi is classified as Josaku and stands as the pivotal figure linking the Fukuoka Ichimonji tradition of the middle Kamakura period to the Yoshioka Ichimonji school that carried the Ichimonji legacy through the late Kamakura and Nanbokucho periods.
