Yoshioka Ichimonji Sukemitsu

Yoshioka Ichimonji Sukemitsu was a swordsmith of the Yoshioka Ichimonji school active in Bizen Province (Yoshioka district, present-day Akou and Kume regions of Okayama Prefecture) during the late Kamakura and early Nanbokucho periods (ca. 1319–1349). He is universally regarded as "the finest smith of the Yoshioka Ichimonji school" (ichimon zuiichi no meiko). His official title was Sakon-no-shogen; his full given name is inscribed as "Ki Sukemitsu." He is among the very rare ko-bizen-lineage smiths whose surviving works include a confirmed date inscription, making precise art-historical placement possible.

His blades embody the Yoshioka Ichimonji school at its peak. The sugata shows deep koshi-zori with minimal fumbari reduction, broad mihaba, and thick kasane in the late Kamakura-to-Nanbokucho proportions. The jihada is a finely forged mokume-hada with uniform ji-nie and vivid midare-utsuri — the clearest in the school. The hamon is wide nioi-deki with choji-midare and o-choji-midare as the main pattern, incorporating gunome, lively ashi and ha, and occasional saka-ashi. The nioi-guchi is bright and clear, the boshi ko-maru or midare-komi.

His masterwork, the National Treasure naginata inscribed "Ichi Bishu Yoshioka-ju Sakon-no-shogen Ki Sukemitsu, Genko 2 (1320) 11th month" (blade length 56.7 cm), is the most important surviving work of the entire Yoshioka Ichimonji school — rare for combining the school's single-character "ichi" prefix with a full name and date. The Important Cultural Property tachi inscribed with his full name (blade 82.3 cm), traditionally held as the sword of the third Tokugawa shogun Iemitsu, further attests to the esteem in which his work was held.

Sukemitsu is the definitive master of the Yoshioka Ichimonji school, confirmed by dual national designation, and his blades remain the primary reference standards for studying the school's peak period.
