Yamato Shizu

Yamato Shizu refers to a group of Nanbokuchō-period smiths working in Yamato Province (present-day Nara Prefecture) in the lineage of Shizu Kaneuji, whose Mino-based techniques blended with Yamato influence to create a distinctive hybrid style. Their blades feature dramatically flowing ōitame-hada with areas of refined mokume, and the characteristic "Shizu-hamon"—angular gunome hamon with abundant coarse nie and nie-kuzure that give the blades a powerful visual presence. Several works in this tradition survive as Important Cultural Properties and Important Swords, featuring the broad-bladed, thin-spined, long-curved form characteristic of Nanbokuchō-period grandeur. These blades represent the creative cross-fertilization of regional traditions during Japan's era of dynastic conflict.
