Tosa Yukimitsu

Tosa Yukimitsu was a swordsmith active in Tosa Province (present-day Kochi Prefecture) during the mid to late Muromachi period, regarded as one of the finest representatives of Tosa swordsmithing. While Tosa was a small-scale production center far from the major sword traditions, smiths like Yukimitsu developed a distinctive style under Yamato influence. His blades feature a straightforward itame-hada reflecting the practical character of Tosa warriors, restrained suguha or ko-midare hamon with tight nioi and delicate nie, and well-proportioned tachi forms suited to actual use. Serving under the patronage of the rising Chōsokabe clan, his works supplied the martial culture of the Tosa domain. Several signed pieces survive as Important Swords, documenting the reach of sword culture into regional warrior society throughout Japan.
