Rai Kuniyasu

Rai Kuniyasu was a swordsmith of the Rai school active in Yamashiro Province, said to be a son of Rai Kunimitsu. Works attributed to him are traditionally dated to around the Gentoku era (1329-1331).

Lineage and Relocation

Kuniyasu is said to have left his native Yamashiro and settled in Awaji-shō in Settsu Province, becoming the founder of the branch later known as "Awaji-Rai." His disciple, the second-generation Kuniyasu, is said to have subsequently relocated to Tsuruga in Echizen Province and founded the Chiyozuru school.

Assessment

Surviving records are limited, and detailed accounts of his style or representative works are scarce. He is nonetheless recognized as a smith who illustrates how the Yamashiro Rai school branched out into the provinces.
