Osafune Tomomitsu

Osafune Tomomitsu was a swordsmith active in Osafune, Bizen Province, from the Nanbokuchō through the Muromachi period. One of the master craftsmen who upheld the standards of Bizen swordcraft, he carried forward the lineage of such eminent Osafune smiths as Kagemitsu and Kanemitsu. His work is particularly distinguished by robust proportions suited to withstand the large-scale suriage prevalent in the Nanbokuchō period, combined with refined jigane. His steel displays the clear utsuri characteristic of the Bizen tradition against an itame ground, and his hamon—featuring lively combinations of gunome and chōji—exemplifies the distinctive beauty of Osafune craftsmanship. Surviving signed works typically bear the simple inscription 'Tomomitsu' and are known in a wide range of forms, including tachi, katana, and wakizashi. He is believed to have received commissions from the Muromachi shogun and provincial daimyo, and is recognized as one of the smiths who sustained the Osafune school through its period of greatest flourishing.
