Osafune Kiyomitsu

Osafune Kiyomitsu was a swordsmith active in Osafune, Bizen Province (present-day Setouchi City, Okayama) during the mid to late Muromachi period, one of the leading masters of the "Sue-Bizen" (late Bizen) era when the Osafune school transitioned from individual master-craftsmanship to large-scale workshop production to meet the enormous demand generated by the wars of the Ōnin period and beyond. Distinguished from the contemporaneous Kashu Kiyomitsu of Kaga Province by the prefix "Bizen," he stands at the qualitative apex of Sue-Bizen production—a smith who maintained the fundamental Bizen aesthetic (refined ko-itame jigane with clear utsuri, bright chōji-gunome hamon with the sakaganari (reverse-leaning) variations he made his own) despite the intensified pace of output demanded by the age. His katana, characteristically in the mid-Muromachi practical form—short nakago, shallow sori, broad mihaba, chu-kissaki—bear dated signatures "Bizen-no-kuni Osafune-jū Kiyomitsu" in abundance, making him one of the chronologically best-documented Muromachi smiths. Works designated Important Swords and Tokubetsu Jūyō Tōken are held in the Token Hakubutsukan, Okayama Prefectural Museum, and numerous public and private collections throughout Japan.
