Osafune Iesuke

Osafune Iesuke was a swordsmith active in Osafune, Bizen Province (present-day Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture) during the early Muromachi period, one of the representative masters of the "Ōei Bizen" era—the flowering of the Osafune school during the Ōei years (1394–1428) after the golden age of Kagemitsu and Kanemitsu had passed. The Ōei Bizen smiths—Morimitsu, Yasumitsu, Moromitsu, and Iesuke—revived the Osafune tradition by establishing a new aesthetic that combined the technical inheritance of the Kamakura-period Osafune masters with the practical and artistic demands of the Muromachi warrior class. Iesuke's blades embody this achievement: a ko-itame jigane of the luminous, bright, moisture-rich quality typical of Ōei Bizen, with evenly distributed jinie and the characteristic "Ōei utsuri" shimmering in the ji; paired with a hamon of chōji and gunome enlivened by reverse-leaning ashi in the style distinctive of the era. He is particularly well known for wakizashi and tantō of high quality, many bearing dated Ōei-period signatures that make him one of the more chronologically-documentable smiths of the school. Surviving signed works, designated Important Swords and Important Art Objects, are held in the Token Hakubutsukan, Okayama Prefectural Museum, and Hayashibara Museum of Art.
