Osafune Hidemitsu

Osafune Hidemitsu was a swordsmith active in Osafune, Bizen Province (present-day Setouchi City, Okayama) during the Nanbokuchō period (mid-to-late 14th century), belonging to the distinguished Osafune lineage that descended from Nagamitsu and Kagemitsu. The Nanbokuchō era marked the zenith of the Osafune school's vitality, when numerous master smiths produced the bold, expansive blades that define the period's aesthetic — long in length, wide in body, large in kissaki — and Hidemitsu was among those who established a distinctive place within this brilliant generation. His jigane shows the finely packed ko-itame with even jinie and clear utsuri characteristic of the Bizen tradition at its best; the hamon, based on lively chōji and gunome with abundant ashi and ha, expresses the vigorous energy of the age. The nioiguchi is bright and active; kinsuji and sunagashi animate the hamon interior. The blade geometry — the heroic ōsuriage (shortened from long tachi) or long ubu proportions with broad mihaba and ō-kissaki — captures the martial grandeur that the warring era demanded. Signed works designated Jūyō Tōken are held in the Tōken Hakubutsukan and regional collections throughout Japan.
