Background
Ogawa Kanekuni II was born as a child of the swordsmith Ogawa Kanekuni (I). His real name is Ogawa Mitsutoshi. His father, Ogawa Kanekuni (I), was a swordsmith certified as mukansa.
Gifu Prefectural Important Intangible Cultural Property
In 2023 he was recognized as a holder of the Gifu Prefectural Important Intangible Cultural Property "Japanese swords".
Style
His works are characterized by tōranba, a hamon evoking large waves breaking on the shore. Tōranba was also a specialty of the first generation, and Kanekuni II has inherited the technique and produced numerous swords in this style. His signatures include forms such as "Mino no kuni jū Kanekuni saku".
Activities
At the 2019 "Famous Swords and Master Smiths of the Heisei Era" exhibition he was chosen in the master-smith selection (meikō-sen). He continues to forge swords in Yamagata City, Gifu Prefecture.
