Naminohira Nagayuki

Naminohira Nagayuki was a swordsmith of the Nanbokuchō to early Muromachi period, working in Satsuma Province (present-day Kagoshima Prefecture) as a key figure of the Naminohira school—one of Japan's southernmost regional smithing traditions. His blades are characterized by the school's distinctive jigane: masame-influenced itame hada with the dark, heavy luster known as "Satsuma-tetsu" or "Naminohira-tetsu" produced from local Satsuma iron ore. The hamon is typically composed suguha with fine nie and occasional ko-gunome accents. His signed works survive as Important Swords and represent the technical high-water mark of the Naminohira school's middle period, produced under the expanding patronage of the Shimazu clan that came to dominate southern Kyushu.
