Lineage
Kageyori was a Bizen swordsmith active in the mid-Kamakura period. He is said to have been the son of Kagehide, who forged the celebrated blade "Kuronbo-giri," a sword prized by the warlord Date Masamune. He belonged to the Osafune school lineage within the Bizen tradition, and is known to have held the court titles of Sakon Shōgen and Saemon-no-jō.
Style
His steel shows itame mixed with mokume grain, and his hamon includes small patterns combining gunome with chōji, as well as straight chōji-based irregular patterns.
Signature and Notable Work
His signatures include "Kageyori," "Kageyori-zō," and "Bizen-kuni Kageyori-zō," with some works bearing dates from the Kōan era. A tachi signed "Kageyori," 80.7 cm in blade length, is designated an Important Art Object and is held by the Touken World Foundation.
Assessment
As a son of the noted smith Kagehide within the Osafune school, Kageyori is regarded as a smith who carried forward the technical standard of mid-Kamakura Bizen swordsmithing.
