Lineage
Hōjōji Kunimitsu is said to have studied under Sōshū Sadamune, the leading disciple of Masamune, founder of the Sōshū tradition, and to have founded the Hōjōji school in Tajima Province (in the northern part of present-day Hyōgo Prefecture). He is counted among the "Three Sadamune Masters" (Sadamune Santetsu), the three most outstanding of Sadamune's disciples, alongside Yamashiro Nobukuni and Motoshige.
The Hōjōji School
The Hōjōji school, founded by Kunimitsu, continued producing blades in Tajima Province from the Nanbokuchō through the Muromachi period. It is positioned as the branch that carried Sōshū-tradition technique into Tajima, and its lineage was maintained for generations afterward.
Assessment
Kunimitsu's inclusion among the "Three Sadamune Masters" reflects the high regard in which he has been held as one of the legitimate transmitters of the Sōshū tradition. However, securely attributed signed works are scarce, and detailed records of his individual style are limited.
