Fukuoka Ichimonji Muneyoshi

Fukuoka Ichimonji Muneyoshi was a master bladesmith active from the early to mid-Kamakura period in Fukuoka, Bizen Province (present-day Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture), recognized as both a Ko-Ichimonji smith and Go-Toba In-ban kaji (court sword-maker). He stands as one of the preeminent masters of the Fukuoka Ichimonji school, which represents the quintessential Bizen blades of the late Kamakura period. Muneyoshi was particularly celebrated for his exceptional mastery of choji-midare hamon. His blades feature the fine, tightly forged ko-itame (fine wood-grain) texture with bright jigane-nie (surface whitening) and vivid reflections, exemplifying the essence of the Bizen tradition. His hamon is anchored in robust choji-midare with magnificent displays of o-fusa choji (large clove-blossom clusters) and sakagakari choji (reverse-interlocking clove formations) unfolding in bold, commanding patterns. The nioi-kuchi (scent-mouth edge) is bright and crisp, with active kinsuji (gold-lines) and sunagashi (sand-flow patterns), characteristic of the distinctive Fukuoka Ichimonji style.
