Enjū Kuniyasu

Enjū Kuniyasu was a swordsmith who flourished in Higo Province (present-day Kumamoto Prefecture) in the mid-Kamakura period and ranks among the principal masters of the Enjū school. The Enjū school was a group of swordsmiths that developed distinctively in Kyushu under Kikuchi clan patronage, with Kuniyasu renowned for his exceptional technical skill. His blades followed the tradition of the Rai school (Yamashiro tradition) while displaying regional characteristics of Kyushu; the steel showed a soft, gentle texture combining wood-grain and burl-grain patterns, with fine pitting throughout. The blade pattern featured a straight-edge foundation interspersed with small irregular motifs in gentle composition, with fine pitting evenly distributed along the edge. Signed works are rare, but confirmed blades are highly valued as important swords.
