Enju Kunisuke

Enju Kunisuke was a swordsmith who flourished from the late Kamakura period through the early Nanboku-chō period in Higo Province (present-day Kumamoto Prefecture) and ranks as one of the representative masters of the Enju school. The Enju school was a group of smiths that flourished in Higo under strong patronage of the Kikuchi clan, with Kunisuke recognized as a key figure bearing the responsibility of its golden age. While inheriting the Raiden (Yamashiro) lineage, he developed a distinctive style shaped by Kyushu's unique production environment. His jigane features warm jigō combining itame with mokume grain, displaying fine and uniform jigwa with distinct jikage. His hamon is characterized primarily by ko-midare and gunome patterns, with the blade edge showing crisp and vibrant nie. Among Enju smiths, Kunisuke demonstrates exceptionally high technical standards and serves as an important reference point in sword appraisal.
