Enju Kunisuke

Enju Kunisuke was a swordsmith active in Higo Province (present-day Kumamoto Prefecture) from the late Kamakura period to the early Nanboku-chō period, and he is one of the representative master smiths of the Enju school. The Enju school was a group of swordsmiths that flourished in Higo Province under the strong patronage of the Kikuchi clan, and Kunisuke is known as the smith who carried its peak period. While inheriting the lineage of the Rai school (Yamashiro tradition), he has a distinctive style born of the production environment unique to Kyūshū. His jigane has a warm texture, itame mixed with mokume, with fine, even ji-nie and vivid chikei at work. His hamon shows nie along the habuchi and displays a crisp finish. Among the Enju school, he is regarded as a smith of particularly high technical standard and serves as an important reference point in sword appraisal.
