Bizen Sadahide

Bizen Sadahide was a swordsmith active in Osafune (present-day Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture) during the Nanbokuchō through early Muromachi periods, a practitioner of the long-running Osafune school that produced generations of celebrated Bizen swordsmiths from Kagemitsu and Kanemitsu through Morimitsu, Yasumitsu, and Sukesada. His blades occupy an interesting transitional position between the bold, turbulent aesthetics of the Nanbokuchō period and the more refined, settled craftsmanship of the early Muromachi era: a precisely-grained ko-itame jigane with the bright, moist texture characteristic of Bizen tradition; a hamon of chōji and midare-chōji with active ashi and yō; and in his finest works, the thick jinie and scenic landscape of iron that connects him to the great Nanbokuchō masters. Signatures including "Bizen-no-kuni Osafune-jū Sadahide" and "Sadahide" appear on surviving tachi, katana, wakizashi, and tantō, several designated as Important Swords or Important Art Objects and held in the Token Hakubutsukan and Okayama Prefecture museums. His work serves as a valuable reference point for the technological continuity and stylistic evolution of the Osafune school.
