Bizen Kanehira

Bizen Kanehira was a swordsmith active in Bizen Province (present-day Okayama Prefecture) during the late Heian through early Kamakura period, regarded as the supreme master of the Ko-Bizen (Ancient Bizen) school and accorded the highest rating of saijōsaku. Among the most revered names in Japanese sword history, his blades represent the pinnacle of early Bizen craftsmanship: a densely-grained ko-itame jigane with the characteristic deep, blue-tinged texture of quality Bizen iron—the archetype of "Ko-Bizen hada"—and a refined hamon of ko-choji with ko-midare, a subdued nioiguchi, and gentle nie, embodying simultaneously the aristocratic refinement of late Heian court culture and the martial discipline of early Kamakura warriors. Several surviving tachi attributed to Kanehira bear the status of "meibutsu" (named masterpieces), treasured by Tokugawa shoguns and major daimyo, and rated at the highest level in Edo-period connoisseurship manuals. Works designated Important Cultural Properties are held in the Tokyo National Museum, Kyoto National Museum, and Token Hakubutsukan, where they stand among the finest surviving examples of classical Japanese swordmaking.
