Awataguchi Ryosei

Awataguchi Ryosei was a swordsmith active in Awataguchi, Yamashiro Province (present-day Higashiyama, Kyoto) during the mid-Kamakura period, belonging to the celebrated Awataguchi school, regarded as the pinnacle of classical Japanese swordsmithing. His blades display the characteristic refinement of the Awataguchi tradition: a dense ko-itame jigane with a lustrous blue-tinged texture known as "Awataguchi-hada," a hamon of ko-choji and ko-midare with delicate ashi and yo, and a tight nioiguchi with fine nie—all hallmarks of the Yamashiro tradition's elegant aesthetic. Though surviving authenticated works are few, those that exist include designated Important Cultural Properties and Important Swords. His two-character signature "Ryosei" is rendered in an archaic yet assured calligraphic style. Ryosei stands among the distinguished roster of Awataguchi smiths—including Yoshimitsu, Kuniyoshi, Kunitsuna, Hisakuni, Yoshiie, and Kuniyasu—as a representative of the school's consistently exceptional quality during the golden age of Japanese sword-making.
