Aoe Tameji

Aoe Tameji (also known as Kitsunegasaki Tameji) is inscribed in sword history as one of the master craftsmen representing Ko-Aoe, who flourished from the late Heian through the early Kamakura period based in Bitchu Province. The Aoe school was a major group of sword makers that flourished from the late Heian through the Nanboku-Chō period, centered in Aoe-shō, Bitchu Province (present-day vicinity of Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture), and has been treasured throughout history for its distinctive jigane expression and hamon. Tameji was a master smith who exemplified this Aoe tradition with refined dignity.

A distinctive characteristic of the Aoe school overall is a unique landscape pattern appearing in the jigane called "miozukushi" or "nieutsuri." This manifests as a pale, haze-like pattern within the forge surface, which differs from the utsuri of Ko-Bizen blades and serves as an important diagnostic marker of the Aoe school's distinctive jigane. Tameji's jigane displays well-refined itame skin texture with nieutsuri standing out sharply and clearly, and exhibits the distinctive depth characteristic of the Aoe school.

His hamon is characterized by notare as the primary element, interspersed with ko-gunome, and displays gentle undulations approaching chūsuguha. Fine nie and ko-nie particles adhere finely along the edge boundary to form the hamon, and some examples reveal the refined dignity characteristic of Ko-Aoe within an antique, elegant aesthetic. His blade proportions range from gracefully curved tachi with pronounced curve to elegant forms that maintain their dignity even after reworking and remounting.

His representative work is the National Treasure tachi signed 'Tameji' (Kitsunegasaki, housed in the Yoshikawa Historical Museum). Within the lineage of the rare Bitchu tradition Aoe school, Tameji is recognized by sword collectors and researchers as a representative master of Ko-Aoe, commanding substantial scholarly attention.
