Killing (Zan)

Killing (Japanese title: Zan, 斬、) is a 2018 Japanese period film written, directed, shot, and edited by Shinya Tsukamoto, best known for the Tetsuo series. It opened in Japanese theaters on November 24, 2018, with Tsukamoto himself appearing on screen as the elderly samurai Sawamura.

Set in a rural village during the turbulent final years of the Edo shogunate, the film follows the ronin Mokunoshin Tsuzuki (Sosuke Ikematsu), who has settled in the village and spars daily with a farmer's son, Ichisuke (Ryusei Maeda), to keep his swordsmanship sharp. When the aging samurai Sawamura arrives seeking recruits for the civil war brewing in Kyoto, and a band of outlaw ronin led by Genda (Tatsuya Nakamura) invades the village, the village's fragile peace is dragged into a spiral of violence.

The cast includes Sosuke Ikematsu, Yu Aoi, and Tatsuya Nakamura, with Tsukamoto handling virtually every major creative role himself, a hallmark of his highly personal filmmaking. The film screened in the main competition of the 75th Venice International Film Festival in 2018 and was the sole Japanese selection in the Masters section of the Toronto International Film Festival that year.

Rather than treating swordplay as spectacle, Killing centers its drama on Tsuzuki's agonized hesitation over whether to kill, using the sword as a device to interrogate the moral weight of taking a life — resulting in blade violence that is raw and unglamorous rather than the stylized action typical of many jidaigeki films.
