Description
A novel by Aneko Yusagi published on "Shosetsuka ni Naro" from 2012 and adapted into anime in 2019. While the protagonist Naofumi Iwatani is summoned as the Shield Hero, it was companion Raphtalia's fluid sword technique with curved blades and short swords that captured viewer attention. The sword depictions in the story are strongly influenced by the aesthetics of Japanese swordsmanship (iaido, battojutsu), with blade orientation and spacing evoking Japanese sword martial arts. A symbolic work of the light novel isekai fantasy genre in which Japanese sword martial arts aesthetics have permeated the worldbuilding, embodying the global export of KATANA aesthetics. In particular, following the surge in anime popularity from 2019 onwards, overseas viewership increased dramatically, expanding interest in Japanese swords and swordcraft to a new generation of viewers.
