忍びの国
A 2017 ninja period-action film based on Ryo Wada's novel, following the mercenary shinobi Mumon amid the Tenshō Iga War between Oda Nobunaga's army and the ninja of Iga.
Description
Mumon: The Land of Stealth (忍びの国, 2017), directed by Yoshihiro Nakamura and based on Ryo Wada's novel, is a jidaigeki ninja action film starring Satoshi Ohno as Mumon, a mercenary shinobi of Iga who will do anything for money. When Mumon kills a rival ninja for a bounty, the act sets off a chain of events culminating in the Tenshō Iga War, a brutal conflict between Oda Nobunaga's army and the ninja of Iga Province. The film is celebrated for its acrobatic, largely practical stuntwork — ninjas erupting from trees, rocks, and the ground itself in sequences that blend slapstick comedy with visceral violence rather than relying on CGI. Alongside ninja tools like the ninjato and shuriken, the film contrasts shinobi combat with the formal swordsmanship of the samurai's uchigatana, dramatizing a clash of two distinct warrior cultures with crowd-pleasing flair.
