Description
Overview
Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is a stealth-focused real-time tactics game developed by German studio Mimimi Games and published by Daedalic Entertainment. It launched for Windows, macOS and Linux on 17 May 2016, later reaching PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Following in the lineage of the Commandos and Desperados series, it earned strong reviews as a top-down game about maneuvering a squad past enemy sightlines to complete objectives undetected.
Japan at the Dawn of the Edo Period
The story unfolds in 1615, just after the Tokugawa shogunate's founding. To thwart a conspiracy threatening the shogun, ninja protagonist Hayato is gradually joined by four distinct allies: the veteran sniper Yuki, the trap-building tinkerer Aiko, the hunter Takuma, and the ronin swordsman Mugen. Each character has unique abilities, and players combine them to slip past guards and eliminate targets.
Mugen, the Sword-Wielding Ronin
Among the five, Mugen is the one who most embodies the sword. He is the only character able to face enemy samurai in open combat, striking down foes with a swift katana draw and unleashing "Sword Wind," a technique that cuts down every ordinary soldier in a radius around him. His bulky samurai armor keeps him from swimming or climbing anything but ladders, reinforcing his identity as a blunt, sword-first bruiser within an otherwise stealth-first cast.
Reception and Legacy
The game earned strong Metacritic scores and a devoted following among players who prize "thinking-person's stealth puzzles." A prequel expansion, Shadow Tactics: Aiko's Choice, followed in 2019, and Mimimi Games went on to make the pirate-themed Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew. A Nintendo Switch 2 port arrived in 2026, keeping this Edo-period tale of stealth and steel finding new players nearly a decade after release.
