Overview
"Sengoku Youko" is a manga by Satoshi Mizukami. It began serialization in the February 2008 issue of Mag Garden's "Monthly Comic Blade" and concluded in 2016 after a second part that started in 2011. The TV anime was produced by the studio WHITE FOX and aired in three cours from January to December 2024, developed in two parts: "Yonaoshi Kyoudai-hen" and "Senma Konton-hen."
Story and Setting
Set in a chaotic era reminiscent of the Sengoku period, the work depicts a world in which humans and yokai called "katawara" (ayakashi) are in conflict. Tama, a fox yokai who loves humans, and Jinka, her human foster brother who hates humans despite being human himself, set out on a journey to cut off the root of the conflict. Along the way they are joined by companions, including Shinsuke, a timid swordsman who seeks strength, and Shakugan, a girl who was remade through the cruel experiments of the Danka-shu (Danka-shu), as they confront the chain of hatred between katawara and humans.
The Swordsman Shinsuke and the Position of Swords
Shinsuke, one of the main characters, appears as a "cowardly swordsman" who joins the journey in search of strength. His characterization, holding a sword while confronting his own weakness, reflects the nature of this work, which does not present a simple action spectacle of invincible heroes but makes "the resolve to carry a blade" one of its themes. Because the setting is the Sengoku period, the sword remains at the center of the story as a practical weapon in battles against the katawara.
Production and Development
The director is Kazuaki Aizawa, the series composition and scripts are by Jukki Hanada, the character designs are by Yosuke Okuda, and the music is by Evan Call. Ryohei Kimura voiced Shinsuke. In September 2024 a stage adaptation was also produced, and roughly eight years after the manga concluded, the work has undergone multifaceted media development.

A large-scale historical film with a total production cost of 2 billion yen and cumulative attendance exceeding 1.8 million. Rooted in the historically documented famous swords of Nobunaga — Sozan Samonji (Yoshimoto Samonji) and Heshikiri Hasebe — this is an important work from the perspective of sword culture, in which Nobunaga's sword aesthetics under the banner of 'Tenka Fubu' (Rule the Realm Through Arms) intersect with Nōhime's strength.
