Description
"Sekiro: No Defeat" is the official anime film adaptation of FromSoftware's critically acclaimed 2019 action game "Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice," which won multiple Game of the Year awards upon release. Directed by Kenichi Kutsuna and produced by Studio Qzil.la, the film is rendered entirely in hand-drawn 2D animation—a deliberate and notable choice in an era when most game-based anime rely heavily on CGI. The production committee has explicitly stated that no generative AI will be used in the production.
The story is set in the land of Ashina, a domain nestled deep in snow-covered mountains during Japan's Sengoku period (Warring States era). Kuro, the last descendant of a special bloodline known as the "Dragon's Heritage," possesses blood said to grant immortality. Every faction desperate for power seeks to claim Kuro's gift. Wolf (Sekiro), a one-armed shinobi rescued from a battlefield as a child and trained as a master of ninjutsu, has sworn his life to protect his young lord. Bound by the duties of loyalty and the burden of "immortality-severing," Wolf engages in deadly combat against countless enemies across the fractured, war-torn land of Ashina.
Central to the work is the theme of death and rebirth. The game's celebrated "die and learn" design philosophy is translated into the anime as Wolf's repeated confrontations with death—a narrative engine that drives both the action and his character arc. The combat sequences honor the original game's swordsmanship and shinobi techniques, including the prosthetic shinobi tool (gishu-shinobi-gu) that enables diverse fighting styles, and the decisive "Shinobi Deathblow" (shinobi-goroshi) mechanic. Sword techniques depicted draw from real classical martial arts traditions, incorporating elements of iai (quick-draw), battō-jutsu (sword-drawing art), and posture-breaking attacks rooted in ancient warrior combat schools.
A theatrical trailer was released by Crunchyroll in June 2026. The Japanese theatrical run is scheduled to begin September 4, 2026 for three weeks, after which Crunchyroll will stream the film globally (excluding Japan, China, Korea, Russia, and Belarus). The adaptation has attracted attention from both the game community and anime fans, with some critics already naming it a leading contender for Anime of the Year 2026.
