Overview
"Samurai Pizza Cats: Blast from the Past!" is a new video game based on "Kyattō Ninden Teyandee," an anime produced by Tatsunoko Production that aired in 1990-1991 and was localized abroad as "Samurai Pizza Cats." The game is developed by the Dutch independent studio Blast Zero (formerly Tanuki Creative Studio, developer of the 2022 beat-'em-up "Jitsu Squad") and published by Red Dunes Games. It is scheduled for release in 2026 on major platforms including PC (Steam/Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch.
Origin of the Project
The project is reported to have originated from an overseas fan's collaboration pitch to Tatsunoko Production. It was announced as a new title marking the 35th anniversary of the original anime's broadcast, with Satoru Akahori, the original series' scriptwriter, returning as script supervisor for the game.
Gameplay
The game is a side-scrolling 2D action-RPG that combines platforming and puzzle-solving elements across its stages. Players can switch between three main characters, each with unique abilities, using fast-paced combat built around special attacks and combos, alongside a leveling system for character progression. Its anime-inspired visual style aims to recapture the look and feel of the original series.
Voice Cast
Nearly all of the original English and Japanese voice actors from the anime have returned to reprise their roles for the game.
Context
The source anime, "Kyattō Ninden Teyandee," was a comedy series known for its cast of anthropomorphic cat ninjas who fought with swords. This game is positioned as an effort to revive that comedic period-drama parody world as a video game for a new generation.
