Overview

Record of Ragnarok (終末のワルキューレ, Shūmatsu no Walkūre) is a fighting-fantasy manga created by Shinya Umemura, co-written by Takumi Fukui, and illustrated by Ajichika. It has been serialized in Coamix's Monthly Comic Zenon since December 2017. The Netflix original anime adaptation, produced by Graphinica, launched Season 1 in June 2021, Season 2 in January and July 2023, and Season 3 in December 2025, making it available in over 190 countries.

Premise: Gods vs. Humanity

Every 13 billion years the gods of the world convene to deliberate humanity's fate. When the vote turns to extinction, the Valkyrie Brynhildr proposes a last-chance tournament: Ragnarok, thirteen one-on-one bouts pitting a god from world mythology against a human champion drawn from across history. Victory requires seven wins. Humanity's roster includes historical warriors, inventors, and rulers; the gods come from Greek, Norse, Hindu, Chinese, and other mythologies.

Round Three: Sasaki Kojiro and the Japanese Katana

The episode most celebrated by sword enthusiasts is Round Three—Sasaki Kojiro (humanity) vs. Poseidon (Greek god of the sea). Kojiro Sasaki (c. 1585–1612) was a historical Japanese swordsman famed primarily for losing his duel with Miyamoto Musashi at Ganryū Island, earning the epithet "History's Greatest Loser." In the narrative, he is recast as a savant who converted every defeat into refined technique, spending centuries perfecting a theoretical ideal of swordsmanship.

His weapon is "Monohoshizao" (物干し竿, Laundry Pole), a historical epithet for his unusually long katana measuring approximately 110 cm. Fused with the Valkyrie Hrist to become a divine instrument, the blade takes on godslaying properties. His ultimate technique, "Tsubame Gaeshi" (燕返し, Swallow Counter-Slash), is a historically attested sword move referenced in documents relating to the Ganryū Island duel. In the story it is depicted as a triple simultaneous slash that overwhelms Poseidon's speed.

Historical Grounding

The work draws authentically on Japanese sword history: Kojiro's long katana and the Tsubame Gaeshi technique both appear in historical sources, and the portrayal of Kojiro as a wandering swordfighter who accumulated defeats as a learning method reflects documented aspects of mushabugyō (warrior's pilgrimage) culture. The narrative framework—a "loser" besting a god—is a philosophical reimagining of how Japanese sword schools historically valued accumulated loss as the path to mastery.

Cultural Impact

Netflix distribution gave the series a genuinely global audience. Clips of the Kojiro vs. Poseidon fight circulated widely on social media, introducing the concepts of Tsubame Gaeshi, the nodachi (extra-long katana), and Japanese sword philosophy to viewers who had no prior knowledge of sword culture. Japanese kendo and iaido organizations noted the surge in international inquiries following the anime's debut.
