Overview
Overwatch is a team-based, six-versus-six hero shooter developed by Blizzard Entertainment, released on May 24, 2016 for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, with a Nintendo Switch version following in October 2019. Players choose from a diverse roster of heroes, each with unique abilities, and work together in teams to complete map-specific objectives.
Genji, the Katana-Wielding Cyborg Ninja
Among its heroes is Genji Shimada, heir to a Japanese ninja clan, whose body was rebuilt as a cyborg by the Overwatch scientist Mercy after he was left for dead following a violent conflict with his brother, Hanzo. In combat, Genji throws shuriken and wields a katana as his primary weapon.
Dragonblade and Swordplay
His Deflect ability lets him bat away incoming attacks with his blade, his Swift Strike sends him dashing through enemies in a katana slash, and his ultimate ability, Dragonblade, allows him to instantly cut down any enemy he strikes with the sword for a limited time. Combining a futuristic cyborg-ninja concept with the fighting style of a traditional Japanese swordsman, Genji has become one of Overwatch's most recognizable and popular heroes.

Uchigatana
The standard form of Japanese sword worn edge-up in the belt from the Muromachi period onward. The blade Genji carries at his hip follows this same straight, functional uchigatana silhouette, reinforcing his design as a character who blends the imagery of the ninja and the samurai.
Battōjutsu / Iaijutsu
The swordsmanship discipline of instantly drawing a sheathed blade and completing a cut within that same motion, systematized as an essential samurai skill during the Edo period. Genji's Deflect, which parries an attack in an instant, and Swift Strike, which closes the distance to an enemy in a single dashing cut, both evoke this same swift, decisive handling of the blade.
Dragon Horimono (Engraved Dragon Motifs)
Japanese swords carry a long tradition of horimono — engraved carvings on the blade — depicting dragons such as the kurikara, often tied to Fudō Myōō worship and used to lend the blade a sense of power. The name of Genji's ultimate ability, Dragonblade, recalls this traditional pairing of the sword and the dragon in Japanese blade artistry.
