モンスターハンター
A Capcom action RPG series launched in 2004. Its signature "Long Sword" (太刀, tachi) weapon class is styled after Japanese swords, and in 2022 a team of swordsmiths in Sakai, Osaka forged a full-scale real-steel replica of "Kakaru Kumo Naki," a Long Sword from "Monster Hunter Rise."
Description
Overview
"Monster Hunter" is an action RPG series developed and published by Capcom, with the first installment released March 11, 2004, for PlayStation 2. Players take on the role of hunters who track and defeat giant monsters using weapons and traps, then use the materials gathered to upgrade their gear, establishing the "hunting action" genre. The series has since expanded through numerous entries, including "Monster Hunter: World," "Monster Hunter Rise," and "Monster Hunter Wilds" (released February 28, 2025), and has become a globally popular franchise.
Relationship to Swords
The series offers a wide variety of weapon types, including the Great Sword, Sword and Shield, Dual Blades, Hammer, and Bowgun, but the "Long Sword" (太刀, tachi) has been one of its signature weapons since the original title, styled after Japanese swords. In 2022, a team of artisans led by swordsmith Jun Mizuno of Sakai, Osaka — the fifth-generation head of Mizuno Tanrenjo — forged a full-scale, real-steel replica of "Kakaru Kumo Naki," a Long Sword from "Monster Hunter Rise," measuring roughly 3.1 meters in length and weighing about 150 kilograms, which was unveiled at an exhibition in Sakai. Woodcarver Akihiko Maeda carved the hilt from a single block of zelkova wood, while painter Masakazu Yamaguchi studied over 100 hours of in-game footage to recreate the blade's shifting light reflections in the finish; the project took roughly three years from planning to completion.
Style and Gameplay
The series is defined by rigorous, deliberate action in which players study each monster's distinct attack patterns while judging their weapon's weight, reach, and timing. A gear-upgrade loop built on gathering materials keeps players engaged over long periods, and cooperative multiplayer has been emphasized throughout the franchise.
Cultural Impact
"Monster Hunter" is one of Capcom's flagship IPs, enjoying strong popularity both in Japan and abroad, with live-action film adaptations, anime, and numerous collaborations. The Sakai swordsmith team's creation of a real-steel "Kakaru Kumo Naki" drew attention as a rare case of a fictional in-game weapon being physically realized through real traditional Japanese swordmaking craftsmanship.
