Description
Overview
Legend of the Five Rings (often abbreviated L5R) is both a fictional setting depicting the feudal-Japan-inspired nation of Rokugan and the family of games built on it: a collectible/living card game and a tabletop role-playing game. It was first published as a card game by Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) in the United States in 1995, later passing through Wizards of the Coast and Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) before its current custodian, Edge Studio (part of Asmodee), took over the license. In 2017, FFG relaunched the card game in the "Living Card Game" format, lowering the barrier of entry for new players.
Rokugan and the Seven Great Clans
Rokugan reflects the warrior society of Japan's Sengoku-to-Edo periods while folding in elements from Chinese, Mongolian and Korean culture. Seven Great Clans — Lion, Crane, Crab, Phoenix, Dragon, Scorpion and Unicorn — each maintain their own martial arts, etiquette and creed, and the setting's stories revolve around court politics, war and the supernatural, all bound together by honor and loyalty. Players take on samurai belonging to a specific clan, weaving the setting's ongoing narrative either through card-game armies and schemes or through tabletop role-play.
The Sword as Symbol
For a Rokugani samurai, the katana is far more than a weapon — it is a family heirloom passed down through generations, revered as "the soul of the samurai." Within the games, the sword stands for honor, lineage and the ritual of the duel: in the "Duel" mechanic, the speed of the draw and the nerve of the duelist decide the outcome. Losing one's sword is tantamount to losing one's honor, while carrying an ancestral blade inherited from a lord or forebear repeatedly signals a character's house rank and narrative weight.
Reception and Legacy
As a card game, L5R sustained a long-running North American tournament scene, and its tabletop RPG has gone through multiple editions over three decades. It is widely credited with introducing samurai society and Japanese sword culture to a broad overseas fan base and has influenced later wafu (Japanese-style) fantasy works. Edge Studio continues to publish new supplements, with the sourcebook "Shadowlands" scheduled for release in 2026.
