It was released on 18 April 2019 for Nintendo Switch, Windows and macOS, later reaching Xbox One (2020) and Android/iOS (2024). Set in the "Third District" of the retro-futuristic dystopian city of New Mecca — a city still scarred by a major war — the player controls Subject Zero (Zero), an amnesiac katana-wielding assassin.
Game Systems and the Sword
Zero fights with a single katana in a high-difficulty stealth-action format where a single hit kills an enemy — and a single hit kills Zero too. Combined with the ability to slow time and briefly foresee his own actions, the game builds fluid, almost single-stroke sequences of slashing, deflecting and precise timing. After clearing a level, the game replays the player's own run as "surveillance footage," reinforcing themes of the subjectivity of violence and an unreliable narrator. The story follows Zero as he suffers nightly nightmares, receiving both missions and medication from his psychiatrist, foregrounding PTSD and drug dependency as core themes.
Relationship to History
The sword and swordsman in this game are not based on any specific historical swordsmith, named blade or historical figure. It is a work of fiction that adapts the recurring "lone masterless swordsman" archetype of jidaigeki and chanbara cinema into the setting of an amnesiac 1980s neo-noir assassin; the developers have cited the influence of Akira Kurosawa's period films, while the dreamlike narration also shows the influence of Philip K. Dick's fiction. Rather than drawing on any real sword or swordsmith, the game borrows the katana purely as a cultural icon.

Katana Zero sold 500,000 copies in under a year and was widely praised for the polish of its sword-based combat within 2D pixel-art action design.
