Inherit the Winds

"Inherit the Winds" is an original TV anime produced by Aniplex. The series was first announced in September 2025, with a January 2027 broadcast date, promotional video, and additional cast revealed in March 2026. Animation production is handled by Live2D Creative Studio and Drive, with direction by Tomohiro Kawamura, screenplay by Yutaka Narui, character designs by Fumi Ebina, and music by Shigeru Kishida. The series is scheduled to air on the "Agaru Anime" programming block across 26 networks in the CBC/TBS network group. A theatrical advance screening in Japan is also planned before the January 2027 TV premiere.

The story is set in 1863 (Bunkyū 3rd year) in Kyoto—the ancient imperial capital caught in the storm of the Bakumatsu era. An amnesiac young man wanders into the barracks of the Mibu Rōshigumi (Mibu Masterless Samurai Corps, later to become the Shinsengumi), where he encounters the prodigious swordsman Okita Sōji. Okita names the man "Tachikawa Jinsuke" and, recognizing his latent talent with a blade, welcomes him as a soldier of the Mibu corps. Carrying the weight of lost memories, Jinsuke earns the trust of his comrades through sincerity and swordsmanship, navigating the turbulent final years of the Edo period.

As a work centered on the Shinsengumi—often called "the wolves of Mibu"—the series is anticipated to feature period-authentic sword depictions. The swords wielded by Kondō Isami, Hijikata Toshizō, and Okita Sōji rank among the most famous in Japanese sword history. Okita's beloved blades, the Kashū Kiyomitsu and the Yamatono-kami Yasusada, are well known to sword enthusiasts, and their potential appearance in the narrative is a point of anticipation. The amnesia motif carries a dual resonance: on a personal level, Jinsuke's lost past mirrors the erasure of the old order during the Bakumatsu transition—a period in which the memory of the samurai way was itself fading.

Related media includes a four-panel manga adaptation by Matsuri Muramatsu, set to begin serialization in 2026 on Kodansha's X (formerly Twitter) Twi4 account and the Saizensen website. Some cast members were announced in January 2026, with further reveals anticipated.
