Overview
"Genshin Impact" (Japanese title: Genshin) is an open-world action RPG developed by China's miHoYo (now HoYoverse), released September 28, 2020, on PC, PlayStation, and iOS/Android. It uses a free-to-play gacha monetization model, and players explore and fight by switching between characters who wield seven elements: Anemo, Geo, Electro, Dendro, Cryo, Pyro, and Hydro. The game unfolds as an open world in which regions inspired by cultures from around the globe are added progressively, and it became a major worldwide hit.
Relationship to Swords
Version 2.0, released in July 2021, introduced "Inazuma," an island nation heavily modeled on Edo-period Japan. Many playable characters from Inazuma wield "sword" weapons styled after katana, including Kamisato Ayaka, Kaedehara Kazuha, and the Raiden Shogun. Some of these one-handed swords carry Japanese-sounding names, such as the Amenoma Kageuchi, but these are fictional weapons and are not depictions modeled on any specific surviving named sword or historical swordsmith. The Raiden Shogun, who rules Inazuma, is herself a sword-wielding character; in the story she issues the "Vision Hunt Decree," confiscating the god-given "Visions" that grant elemental power from her subjects in pursuit of an unchanging ideal of "Eternity." This decree, evoking Japan's historical policy of national seclusion, forms the central conflict of the Inazuma story arc, though it too is a fictional plot device rather than a depiction of actual history.
Style and Gameplay
Inazuma is built from Japanese visual motifs — torii gates, shrines, wagasa umbrellas, and pine groves — and its soundtrack makes heavy use of instrumentation evoking the koto and shakuhachi. Weapon types are divided into swords, claymores, polearms, bows, and catalysts, and players build strategic parties around combining elemental reactions in combat.
Cultural Impact
Genshin Impact surpassed $1 billion in mobile revenue within six months of launch, setting a record at the time for the fastest mobile game to reach that milestone, and has gone on to generate billions of dollars in revenue worldwide as a multi-platform title. Its Inazuma region has played a role in introducing Japanese aesthetics to overseas players, though it should be noted that its sword designs are fantasy elements incorporating Japanese motifs rather than faithful reproductions of real historical Japanese swords.
