Description
Overview
From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman: My Hotshot Disciples Are All Grown Up Now and They Won't Leave Me Alone is a light novel series by Shigeru Sagazaki, illustrated by Tetsuhiro Nabeshima. It began serialization on the web-novel site Shosetsuka ni Naro in November 2020 and was picked up by Square Enix's SQEX Novel imprint in April 2021.
Anime Adaptation
The TV anime began airing on 5 April 2025 on TV Asahi's IMAnimation block, BS Asahi, AT-X and other channels, with worldwide streaming on Prime Video. It was produced by Passione and Hayabusa Film. Akio Kazumi directed, Kunihiko Okada handled series composition, Satsuki Hayasaka designed the characters, and Yasuharu Takanashi composed the music.
Story and Style
Beryl Gardenant is a middle-aged swordsmanship teacher who runs a modest dojo in a remote village. Summoned to the royal capital by a former pupil, Alucia, he becomes a special instructor attached to the knights. Beryl considers his own skills ordinary, yet those around him are astonished by his mastery. The series belongs to the "middle-aged underdog rises" fantasy mold, centered on the bond between a teacher and the grown disciples he trained.
Connection to the Sword
The swordsmanship in the series is depicted as the knightly swordplay of a Western-style fantasy world; no Japanese katana or specific real-world sword appears. Still, the image of a master honored by his students after years of patient training echoes the ideals of the Japanese dojo and the master-disciple relationship.
Reception and Legacy
The anime aired from April to June 2025 and was followed by a second season. The novels continue to be published and the series has become an established light-novel isekai-style fantasy.
