Overview

Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem is a live-action drama adapting the manga by Shinya Umemura (story) and Eiji Hashimoto (art), serialized in Monthly Comic Zenon (Coamix) from October 2010 to April 2023, collected in 36 volumes with over three million copies sold. The production is a large-scale global project by TBS (Japan's leading commercial broadcaster), U-NEXT (Japan's largest local streaming platform), and THE SEVEN (the studio behind Alice in Borderland and Yu Yu Hakusho).

The release schedule: the "Edo Youth Arc" special aired on TBS and launched on U-NEXT on March 26–27, 2026; the "Kyoto Decisive Battle Arc" followed exclusively on U-NEXT; global streaming on HBO Max in over 100 countries began May 9, 2026.

Sword and Martial Arts Depictions

The source manga bills itself as "Japanese Sword Action Entertainment," emphasizing swordsmanship throughout. The Shinsengumi members — Hijikata Toshizo, Kondo Isami, Okita Soji, and others — are depicted as elite swordsmen. The organization's foundational style was Tennen Rishin-ryu, a practical school of kenjutsu, which underlies the blade work of the principal characters. The live-action production was promoted on the strength of its "spectacular sword-fighting choreography and bold historical interpretation."

Historical Background

The Shinsengumi was formed in 1863 in Kyoto as a police force under the patronage of the Aizu domain. Hijikata Toshizo (1835–1869), the vice-commander nicknamed "Demon of the Shinsengumi," was responsible for its iron discipline and tactical decisions. The 1864 Ikedaya Affair, in which the group suppressed imperial loyalist activists, cemented the organization's reputation. Hijikata died in battle at the Hakodate Goryokaku fortress during the Boshin War. The drama covers this arc as samurai action.
