Work Overview

Song of the Samurai (Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem) is a live-action drama based on the manga by Shinya Umemura (original story) and Eiji Hashimoto (art). The manga ran in Coamix's Monthly Comic Zenon from October 2010 to April 2023, becoming a long-running hit with 36 volumes and over 2 million copies in circulation (as of January 2021). The live-action adaptation is a major global project by TBS, U-NEXT, one of Japan's largest video streaming platforms, and THE SEVEN, a TBS-affiliated production company that contributed to the Netflix live-action Yu Yu Hakusho.

The release schedule is as follows: the "Edo Youth Arc" aired on TBS and premiered early on U-NEXT on March 26–27, 2026; the "Kyoto Showdown Arc" is exclusive to U-NEXT; and a worldwide rollout on HBO Max across more than 100 countries, including North America, Europe, and Latin America, from May 9, 2026, has been confirmed.

Swordsmanship and Blade Depictions

The original manga places strong emphasis on swordsmanship and blade depictions, and the live-action drama is billed as "Japanese sword-action entertainment." The sword skills of the Shinsengumi's renowned swordsmen, centered on Hijikata Toshizō and including Kondō Isami and Okita Sōji, are depicted with care. Shieikan, the dojo of Kondō Isami and others who formed the core of the Shinsengumi, was a dojo of Tennen Rishin-ryū, and in this work Hijikata also loses to Kondō at Shieikan and becomes a disciple.

The creators have announced that the live-action drama will portray the story with "flashy action and bold interpretation," and its sword-fight scenes are considered a highlight.

Historical Background

The Shinsengumi was a public-order organization formed in 1863 (the third year of the Bunkyū era) under the custody of the Aizu Domain, which held the post of Kyoto Shugoshoku. Hijikata Toshizō (1835–1869) served as vice-commander, taking charge of discipline and tactics, and was known as the "Demon Vice-Commander." In the Ikedaya Incident of 1864, the Shinsengumi subdued pro-Imperial, anti-foreign (sonnō jōi) activists, instantly making the group's name famous. After campaigning northward during the Boshin War, Hijikata was killed in action in the Battle of Hakodate at Goryōkaku. This work portrays Hijikata's life as bakumatsu swordsman action.

Main Cast and Staff

Yuki Yamada (as Hijikata Toshizō), Go Ayano, Kento Nakajima, and Jun Matsumoto lead a star-studded cast. The director is Kazutaka Watanabe, the chief producer is Akira Morii, and the producers are Mamoru Inoue and Kazuya Shimomura. By adapting the manga's world as "Japanese sword action," this work can be considered a new challenge in the international expansion of Japanese period dramas.

Impact and Reception

The series recorded the top spot in U-NEXT's domestic rankings. With its worldwide release on HBO Max, it drew international attention, riding the wave of the Japanese period drama boom that followed SHOGUN. The original work's fan base of over 2 million copies forms the foundation for the worldwide release.
