Blue Eye Samurai, created and written by Amber Noizumi and Michael Green with Jane Wu as supervising director, began streaming on Netflix on November 3, 2023. Set during Japan's Edo period (the sakoku era of national isolation), the series follows Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine), a mixed-race bushi with blue eyes and a white father who sets out on a quest for vengeance to find the white man who fathered her. One of the work's defining characteristics is its meticulous depiction of Japanese sword forging and technique. The properties of tamahagane (sword steel), the tatara iron-smelting process, and swordsmith techniques are woven throughout the narrative, reflecting deep respect for Japanese sword culture. The sword technique depictions also employ movements faithfully reproducing iaido and kenjutsu forms, achieving martial authenticity that transcends mere action choreography. The French studio Blue Spirit's 2D/3D hybrid animation was produced aiming to "look like a moving painting." Season 1 earned a 97% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program. Season 2 is scheduled for 2027.

Mizu's katana
The Japanese sword carried by protagonist Mizu. Based on the uchigatana that Edo-period swordsmen would have used, the sword technique depictions in the series integrate elements of iaijutsu, jujutsu, and kenjutsu. The nukitsuke (draw-cut) and ma (distancing/timing) reflect actual koryu (classical martial arts) movements.
