Description
Overview
Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War - The Conflict is the third cour (Part 3) of the anime adaptation of the final arc of Tite Kubo's manga Bleach. It premiered on 5 October 2024 on TV Tokyo and affiliated stations. It was produced by Pierrot and directed by Tomohisa Taguchi. The opening theme is "Kotoba ni Sezu Tomo" by Six Lounge, and the ending theme is "Monochrome" by suisoh.
Place in the Series
Roughly a decade after the original TV anime ended in 2012, adaptation of the final arc began in 2022. The arc begins when the death of Sosuke Aizen gives the Quincy organization the Wandenreich, which had lain dormant for a thousand years, an opening to invade the Soul Society. Note that the cour that follows Part 3 carries the subtitle "Kakaeshinden" (Part 4); the October 2024 broadcast covered by this entry is "The Conflict" (Soukokutan).
Style
The series is known for recasting the manga's battles with high-contrast, ink-wash-inspired compositions and bold color design, with multiple battlefields running in parallel as Shinigami fight the Quincy.
Swords in the Series
A Shinigami's "Zanpakuto" is a sword born from its owner's soul. Calling its name unleashes its Shikai and Bankai forms, each with unique powers. Although they take the basic shape of Japanese swords, the idea that a blade bears a name and a spirit echoes the Japanese tradition of inscriptions and lore attached to famous swords. Zanpakuto are fictional and are not based on any specific historical sword.
Cultural Impact
The manga has a large readership in Japan and abroad as a long-running shonen series, and the designs of Zanpakuto and Bankai are often cited as a representative example of sword-themed character design. The anime revived attention for a series that had long been dormant.
