BAKI-DOU: The Invincible Samurai

Overview

Baki-Dou is the fourth arc of Keisuke Itagaki's fighting manga Grappler Baki, serialized in Weekly Shonen Champion from 2014 to 2018 across 22 volumes. The anime adaptation, produced by TMS Entertainment, began worldwide exclusive streaming on Netflix on February 26, 2026 (Part 1, 13 episodes). Part 2 (12 episodes) dropped simultaneously on June 18, 2026.

Miyamoto Musashi and Swords

The story centers on a forbidden experiment conducted in a secret facility beneath Tokyo Skytree: extracting DNA from the severed remains of Miyamoto Musashi and using cutting-edge cloning technology to resurrect the legendary sword saint. The resurrected Musashi retains the sensibilities and martial techniques of the Edo period, sending shockwaves through modern Japan.

Musashi employs Niten Ichi-ryu, the two-sword style he himself founded, simultaneously wielding a long sword and a short sword. The introduction of blades into a series dominated by grappling and striking creates a distinctly heightened tension.

Historical Background

Miyamoto Musashi (c. 1584–1645) was an early Edo-period swordsman traditionally credited with going undefeated in more than 60 duels. He founded Niten Ichi-ryu (also called Nito Ichi-ryu) and authored The Book of Five Rings (Go Rin no Sho) in his final years, a text still widely read as a classic of strategy and martial philosophy. The series uses science fiction to bring this figure into a contemporary arena, framing the result as a clash across centuries.

Reception

Netflix's global release gave international audiences wide exposure to Musashi's name and the concept of Niten Ichi-ryu. The series Part 2 ending theme is titled "Katana" by J SOUL BROTHERS III, underscoring the symbolic centrality of the sword to the work's identity.
