Overview
On the 12th day of the 2nd month of Bunroku 2 (lunar calendar), the Joseon army under Kwon Yul fought the Japanese army at Haengju Fortress in Korea. The defenders, made up of regular troops and volunteer monk-soldiers, repelled the Japanese attack.
The Two Armies
The Japanese commander-in-chief was Ukita Hideie, and his force is said to have numbered more than 30,000. The Joseon side was commanded by Kwon Yul. Its strength is said to have been fewer than 10,000.
The Fighting
The battle began at about six in the morning, when about a hundred Japanese cavalry of the vanguard appeared. The Japanese attacked the fortress in seven divisions, among them the first under Konishi Yukinaga, the second under Ishida Mitsunari, the third under Kuroda Nagamasa, the fourth under Ukita Hideie, the fifth under Kikkawa Hiroie and the seventh under Kobayakawa Takakage.
Result
The Japanese army could not take the fortress and withdrew. Kikkawa Hiroie's division alone lost 160 dead, and more than 200 Japanese bodies were left on the field. The battle is recorded as a victory for the Joseon forces, regular troops and volunteer monk-soldiers alike.
