Ōno Harunaga

Ōno Harunaga (1569-1615) was a senior retainer of the Toyotomi clan who served Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Hideyori, a warrior deeply involved with Osaka Castle as a close aide to Yodogimi (Chacha). He was suspected of involvement in an assassination plot against Tokugawa Ieyasu in Keichō 4 (1599) and was exiled, but later pardoned and assumed a central role in the government of Hideyori. After Sekigahara he remained in Osaka Castle, managing diplomatic negotiations with Tokugawa Ieyasu while seeking the survival of the Toyotomi clan. During the Winter Siege of Osaka he led peace negotiations with the Tokugawa side, temporarily achieving a settlement; but during the Summer Siege of Osaka he directed the castle's defense and fought fiercely. He ultimately took his own life together with Toyotomi Hideyori and Yodogimi, sharing the fate of the Toyotomi clan's end. His life exemplifies the image of a loyal retainer who was continuously torn between devoted service to his lord and the pragmatic judgment required to survive a turbulent age.
