Description
Overview
"Yoroi-Shinden Samurai Troopers" is a TV anime that began broadcasting and streaming on January 6, 2026. It serves as the official sequel to "Yoroiden Samurai Troopers" (broadcast April 1988-March 1989, known in the West as "Ronin Warriors"), arriving roughly forty years later as a completely new, original story. It is produced by Bandai Namco Filmworks. The first cour aired from January to March 2026, with the second cour beginning July 7, 2026.
Staff and Cast
The series is directed by Yoichi Fujita, known for "Gintama" and "Osomatsu-san," with series composition and screenplay by Shogo Muto and main character design by Yuhei Murota, known for the "Love Live!" franchise. The protagonist, Gai, is voiced by Harunosuke "Yonas" Ishibashi, who played Miguel in Disney/Pixar's "Coco."
Story and the Armor Setting
The series is set in present-day Shinjuku. In the original 1988 series, young protagonists donned suits of armor ("yoroi") modeled after Sengoku-period armor to battle invaders from the Demon Realm; this sequel follows the same basic structure, with armor-wearing warriors confronting a new threat unleashed when the Demon Realm's seal is broken. The armors depicted are entirely fictional constructs and are not modeled on any specific historically named sword or blade.
Cultural Significance
"Yoroiden Samurai Troopers" was one of Sunrise's (now Bandai Namco Filmworks) "Armor Series" titles from 1988, and its overseas broadcast as "Ronin Warriors" on programming blocks such as Toonami is widely credited with shaping the North American anime fandom of the era. This sequel reconstructs that continuity in a present-day Japanese setting roughly forty years later, positioned as a project aimed at both longtime fans and new viewers.
