Overview
"Yoroi-Shinden Samurai Troopers" is a TV anime that began airing and streaming on January 6, 2026. It is the official sequel to "Yoroiden Samurai Troopers" (broadcast April 1988–March 1989, known in the West as "Ronin Warriors"), and was produced as a completely new original story after roughly 40 years. Animation production is by Sunrise. The first cour aired from January to March 2026, and the second cour began airing on July 7 of the same year.
Staff and Cast
The series is directed by Yoichi Fujita, known for "Gintama" and "Osomatsu-san." Series composition and screenplay are by Shogo Muto, and main character design is by Yuhei Murota, known for the "Love Live!" series. The protagonist, Gai, is voiced by Harunosuke Ishibashi, who played Miguel in the Disney/Pixar film "Coco."
Story and Armor Setting
The story is set in present-day Japan (2024). In the previous series, young people wearing "yoroi" armor modeled on Sengoku-period armor fought invaders from the Makai (demon realm). This series follows the same framework, with armor-wearing warriors standing against the renewed invasion of the Yōjakai. All of the armor is fictional and is not modeled on any specific real named sword (meitō).
Distribution
The series is split into two cours, with 24 episodes in total (12 per cour). Overseas, the streaming service Crunchyroll handles distribution, allowing viewers to watch soon after the Japanese broadcast.
Cultural Significance
"Yoroiden Samurai Troopers" was one of the "Armor Series" titles produced by Sunrise (now Bandai Namco Filmworks) in 1988. It aired overseas as "Ronin Warriors" on programming blocks such as Toonami and is known as a work that influenced the formation of the North American anime fan base.
