Overview
Sucker Punch (Japanese title: Angel Wars) is a 2011 action-fantasy film written and directed by Zack Snyder. Set in 1950s America, it depicts Baby Doll, a young woman committed to a mental hospital, who liberates herself within her imagination and takes on a variety of battles.
The Katana and the Giant Samurai Scene
When Baby Doll begins to dance, her consciousness flies to a temple in feudal Japan, where an old master (played by Scott Glenn) gives her a katana and a handgun. She is then attacked in the temple by three giant armored warriors armed with Gatling guns and rocket launchers, and the scene in which she fights them with a katana is known as one of the film's representative action sequences. The katana recurs throughout the film as a symbol of her inner strength and defiance.
Reception
Box office results and critical reception were mixed, but together with its striking visual style, the sword action against the giant samurai is frequently cited as an example of katana imagery in pop culture, and more than ten years after release, the clip continues to be watched on its own.
