Onimusha: Way of the Sword is an action game developed and published by Capcom, scheduled for release on September 25, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. It marks the first mainline entry in the Onimusha series in over 20 years, following 2006's Onimusha: Soul of Onyx.

The game was revealed with a gameplay trailer at The Game Awards 2024 on December 13, 2024. A playable demo launched on June 3, 2026, allowing players to experience dynamic sword combat including a battle against Sasaki Ganryu.

Protagonist and Setting

The protagonist is Miyamoto Musashi, legendary sword saint of Japan's Edo period. The game is set in a fictionalized Edo-era Kyoto corrupted by clouds of Malice, a supernatural malevolent force. Combat revolves around Musashi's Niten Ichi-ryu two-sword style, rendered with modern action-game production values.

Swords and Swordsmanship

The Niten Ichi-ryu two-sword style is the mechanical and thematic heart of the game. Japanese sword aesthetics—blade forging, hamon patterns, and katana silhouettes—are woven throughout the art direction. The demo's recreation of the legendary duel between Musashi and Sasaki Ganryu (Sasaki Hiryu in the game) grounds the fantasy in Japan's real sword-combat tradition.

Cultural Impact

The original Onimusha (2001, PS2) was a landmark title that introduced global audiences to Japanese sword culture. Its revival amid the surge of samurai-genre games following Ghost of Tsushima (2020) represents a major moment for the international appreciation of Japanese swordsmanship and katana heritage.
