Kagurabachi

"Kagurabachi," written and illustrated by Takeru Sotono, has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump since September 2023. As of June 2026, it has surpassed 11 collected volumes. Protagonist Chihiro Rokuhira was trained from childhood in the art of sword-making under his father, Kunishige Rokuhira, a legendary master swordsmith. When the mysterious sorcerer organization known as the Hishaku murders Kunishige and steals the seven Enchanted Blades (Yōtō) he forged across his lifetime, Chihiro inherits the seventh blade—"Enten"—and sets out alone on a path of vengeance to recover the stolen swords and destroy the Hishaku.

At the heart of the work is a philosophy of sword-forging. The Enchanted Blades are made from "Datenseki" (Fallen Heaven Stone), a mysterious ore discovered during wartime that only Kunishige could stabilize into functional blades. This setting resonates with real Japanese sword concepts of tamahagane, satetsu (iron sand), and tatara iron-making. The property of each blade to amplify and manifest its wielder's spiritual energy mirrors the traditional Japanese belief that a sword is a vessel for the soul of its bearer and its maker. The individuality of each of the seven blades—distinguished by their unique traits—evokes real-world sword appraisal methods that identify blades by school, form (sugata), and temper pattern (hamon).

The series renders forging techniques with specificity: temperature management at the furnace, the folding and hammering (orikaeshi tanren), and differential hardening through clay application (tsuchioki) all appear in the narrative. The thematic statement of master smith Kunishige—that a blade is born for its purpose and must be nothing more, nothing less—captures the essence of Japanese sword aesthetics rooted in the beauty of function (yō no bi).

The manga has received strong recognition, winning 1st place in the 10th Next Manga Award (print division), ranking 6th in the male category of "Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2025," and 13th in "Da Vinci Book of the Year 2025." Licensed editions are available in English, French, and other languages. An anime adaptation produced by studio Cypic is set to broadcast from April 2027, with a world premiere screening of the first 20 minutes of Episode 1 planned at Anime Expo in Los Angeles in July 2026, as part of an Anime World Tour. Crunchyroll has secured global streaming rights (excluding Japan, China, Korea, Russia, and Belarus). The protagonist is voiced by Taiki Kimura, winner of the Best New Actor award at the 2025 Seiyu Awards.
