Hokkaido Sakamoto Ryoma Museum, located in Hakodate, Hokkaido, is a memorial museum dedicated to Sakamoto Ryoma (1835–1867), a late-Edo patriot, and the history of the Sakamoto family who ventured to Hokkaido. Through multifaceted exhibitions showcasing Ryoma's dreams of developing Ezo (Hokkaido) and the contributions of his descendants who inherited his legacy to the region's development, the museum conveys the deep connection between Ryoma and Hokkaido.
Ryoma and Hokkaido
Sakamoto Ryoma, a samurai patriot from Tosa, played a crucial role in the late-Edo and Meiji Restoration periods. However, from 1864 onward, he envisioned the development of Ezo (Hokkaido) and made multiple plans for its colonization. Although Ryoma was assassinated in Kyoto in 1867, his legacy was inherited by his descendants, who later contributed to Hokkaido's development and growth. The museum presents the connection between Ryoma and Hokkaido under the theme "Ryoma's Dreams for Hokkaido."
Sword Collection
A hallmark of the museum is its display of approximately 50 swords, including Ryoma's personal sword. The swords on display include blades signed "Yoshiyuki," "Muramasa," "Masamune," "Kanesada," and "Kotetsu," shown alongside items associated with the patriots of the late Edo period.
Exhibits and Materials
Beyond swords, the museum displays Ryoma's letters, personal belongings, and items related to late-Edo patriots, offering multifaceted insights into Ryoma's ideology, actions, and historical context. Positioned geographically in Hakodate and set amid the historic streetscapes, the museum allows visitors to feel the ideals Ryoma entrusted to Hokkaido.

Admission: ¥1,000 (adults/university students, cooperation fee), ¥500 (elementary–high school), free (preschool). Tel: 0138-24-1115. Positioned in the tourist area around Hakodate's historic Motomachi neighborhood, the museum allows visitors to experience Ryoma's history alongside the area's well-preserved streetscapes. While the museum has no parking lot, it offers wheelchair rentals and accessible restrooms for barrier-free access.
